The Pull Factor / Under the Bridge – Helsinki provides documentation of the events in the Roma camp near the Satama Social Center in Helsinki in November 2010, and investigates their causes and effects. It contains contributions and artistic analysis by Johanna Raekallio, Paula Lehtonen, Saara Hannus and Vladan Jeremic. It also includes a comicstrip / info-chart by the Zampa di Leone collective, which is published in English, Romanian and Serbian.

The publication is based on impressions or “art reports” that emerged following the encounters and dialogues with Roma migrant workers, activists, representatives of the City Hall of Helsinki and several institutions. These conversations were intentionally not recorded on audio or video, nor were photographs taken. Such practices were avoided during the process, consciously not giving way to the phenomenological distancing of the camera and the dominant exoticization which such methods have caused in both journalism and art.

This publication is published under Creative Commons License 3.0 Non-Commercial-Share Alike.

The related artistic production on Roma issues, which are being carried out in Helsinki or are based there, are documented here:

http://www.modukit.com/raedle-jeremic/media/thepullfactor_helsinki_supplement.pdf

These include the projects of Sakari Tervo and Tatu Engeström, Ivor Stodolsky and Marita Muukkonen, Sami Maalas, Maija Mustonen and Outi Yli-Viikari.

The Pull Factor / Under the Bridge - Helsinki was realized as a part of the X-OP European Studies Programme.
