YASSINE KHALED: Monitor Man in the time of Pandemic

In Monitor Man, Yassine Khaled creates an embodiment of virtual communication in public space. The artist wears a helmet affixed with an iPad, which offers a real-time connection to a person outside of Europe and the Western world. Through the use of technology and his own body, Khaled uses the performance to transgress actual, national borders which separate people. The performance is an opportunity for people to meet with someone who is physically far away and restricted in their freedom of movement.
Monitor Man was inspired by the current refugee crisis and how it is unfolding in relation to the internet, social media, and the omnipresence of technology. The film of “Monitor Man in the Time of Pandemic” explores the global political crisis from the time of COVID-19 to the social instabilities and movements in the Western world.
About the artist:
Yassine Khaled is a Moroccan visual artist based in Helsinki.
We will open the exhibition on Friday 25 September. The artist Yassine Khaled will be present from 2 pm to 6 pm! Please note, we will not be serving drinks on the opening day.

Monitor Manissa Yassine Khaled luo eräänlaisen ruumiillistuman virtuaalisesta viestinnästä julkiseen paikkaan. Taiteilijalla on kypärä, kiinnitettynä iPadiin, joka ottaa reaaliaikaisen yhteyden Euroopan ja länsimaiden ulkopuoliseen henkilöön. Teknologian ja ruumiinsa avulla Khaled käyttää esitystä ylittääkseen todellisia valtionrajoja eri ihmisten kanssa. Esitys antaa ihmisille mahdollisuuden tavata jonkun, joka on fyysisesti kaukana ja jonka liikkumisvapautta on rajoitettu.
Monitor Man on saanut alkunsa nykyisestä pakolaiskriisistä ja siitä, kuinka se ilmenee suhteessa internetiin, sosiaaliseen mediaan ja teknologian kaikkivoipaisuuteen. Projekti alkoi Helsingin kaduilla vuonna 2016, mutta se on jatkuva, taiteilijan esittäessä työtä eri puolilla länsimaita. Elokuva Monitor Man pandemian aikana tutkii maailmanlaajuista poliittista kriisiä COVID-19:n ajasta sosiaalisiin epävakauksiin ja liikehdintöihin länsimaissa.

Yassine Khaled on marokkolainen kuvataiteilija, joka asuu ja työskentelee Helsingissä.
Näyttely avataan perjantaina 25. syyskuuta. Taiteilija Yassine Khaled on paikalla klo 14—18. Huomioittehan, että avajaispäivänä ei järjestetä juomatarjoilua.
