Näyttely käsittelee kahta keskenään etäistä paikkaa, joita yhdistää niihin sekä niiden rajaamiseen ja tallentamiseen käytettyjen välineiden ominaisuuksiin kiinnitetty erityishuomio.

Paikka merkitsee koettua, elettyä ja muistettua aluetta mutta se voi tarkoittaa myös vaatteen repeämän tai ihon haavan peittämistä tai kiinni kuromista vaurion korjaamiseksi. Linssipohjaiselle välineelle taltioidun paikan kuva on sen merkintä muistiin, mutta kuva voi olla paikka sanan toisessakin merkityksessä. Alueen muututtua, kuva jää jäljelle. Kuva voi tuoda näkyväksi jotain joka vaatii pysähtymistä. Se voi paikata muistia tai traumaa, näyttäen alueen menneet tai menetetyt, olevat ja tulevat mahdollisuudet.

Martti Jämsä esittää kuvissaan Helsingistä tavallisesti huomaamattomiksikin jääviä paikkoja ja kohteita. Mustavalkoiset snapshotit ja värilliset Polaroid-valokuvat tuovat esiin kohteidensa esteettisen potentiaalin kuvakulmien ja kameroiden ominaisuuksien helliessä niiden muotoja, materiaaleja, tiloja ja värejä. Otso Kantokorpi on kirjoittanut seuraavasti: “Eletyn ja koetun hahmottaminen yhdistää menneisyyden ja nykyisyyden. Ajalla on sekä nostalgiset että raadolliset ulottuvuudet. Jämsän Polaroid-kuvat tavoittavat ne molemmat.” Kuvista välittyy rakkaus hetkiin ja paikkoihin, joissa eletyn elämän merkit ovat läsnä.

Kari Yli-Annalan liikkuvat panoraamakuvat on tallennettu Al’Arrubin (مخيّم العروب‎) pakolaisleirin viereisillä rinteillä Palestiinassa. Niissä hyödynnetään VR-elokuvan tekoprosessin välivaihetta, ns. “maisema-formaattia”, jossa 360 asteen kuva-alan toisiinsa liitettyjen osien saumat näkyvät eräänlaisina taitoksina maisemassa. Pakolaisleiri on todellisuudessa kokonainen kaupunki, jossa ihmiset syntyvät, elävät ja kuolevat. Rinteet ovat paikka levolle yksin tai yhdessäololle ystävien kanssa. Maiseman surreaalinen muuntuminen kuvassa korostaa paikan yhteyttä utopian ulottuvuuteen ja sitoo sen poliittisen nykytilanteen keskeneräisyyteen, jossa väkivaltaisen miehityksen päättyminen on kaikkein tärkein toive ja päämäärä.

The exhibition deals with two distant areas. They are bind together by the special attendance given to them and the special qualities of the tools by which their images were framed and recorded.

The Finnish word “paikka” is a word with two meanings. It can be translated as “place”, a site which is lived, remembered and experienced. It can also mean “a patch” sewn to cover a tear in clothes or bind a wound on one’s skin to mend or to heal. A lens-based photograph or a moving image of a place can bring out memories, as it would be saving them. If the place will go through dramatic change, the picture will remind us of it’s former state and which qualities woke up our special attendance. The picture can be a patch for a lost memory or trauma and show the lost or past moments, and also remind us of the present and future possibilities of a site.

Martti Jämsä exhibits photographs of the places and objects in Helsinki which are often left unnoticed. Black and white snapshots and colourful Polaroid photographs bring out tenderly the aesthetic potential of the objects’ forms, materials, spaces and colours with the help of the chosen angles and the properties of the cameras. Otso Kantokorpi has written: “The understanding of the lived and experienced brings the past and the present together. Time has both nostalgic and unscrupulous dimensions. Jämsä’s Polaroid photographs capture both sides.” The photographs show love for the moments and places, where the signs of the lived lives are present.

Kari Yli-Annala’s moving panorama images have been recorded at the slopes around Al’Arrub (مخيّم العروب‎) refugee camp in Palestine. Yli-Annala uses so called “landscape format”, which is a part of the workflow in making a VR movie. In it the seams of stitched parts of 360 degree image have the appearance of kind of folds in the landscape. In reality the refugee camp is a whole city, where people are born, live and die. The slopes around it offer space to rest alone or spend time with friends. The surreal-like transformation of the space within the image emphasises the dimension of utopia in the site and ties it with the incompleteness of the current political situation, in which the ending of violent occupation is the most important wish and aim.

Harjoittelu alkaa syyskuussa tai sopimuksen mukaan. Harjoittelijan tehtäviin kuuluu mm. markkinointi ja tiedotus, näyttelyn valvonta sekä asiakaspalvelu. Harjoittelija osallistuu myös toiminnan kehittämiseen ja suunnitteluun.

We are looking for an intern

The internship starts in September or by agreement. The tasks include marketing and information, guarding the exhibition and customer service. The intern will also participate in planning and developing the activities of the space.

The internship is supported by the unemployment office in form of a work trial. The applicant needs to be registered as unemployed person to be entitled to a work trial.

The internship suits also students as part their studies.

Saaressa kolme vuotta opiskelleina olemme jokapäiväisessä puheessamme viitanneet mantereeseen toisena ja poikkeuksena: tämä ei ole manner. Tämä on jokin muu.

Antimanner on yhdeksän Taidekoulu Maasta keväällä 2019 valmistuvan taiteilijan opinnäyte. Se, millaista oppia näytetään, riippuu paitsi näyttelyn tekijöistä myös sen kokijasta.

Art exhibition of process

The students attending the first year at Taidekoulu Maa display their work-in-progress at Myymälä2 gallery, Uudenmaankatu 23, Helsinki, from 8.5. to 19.5.2019

The exhibition is called TESTING 1,2 and it opens to the public day 8.5. at 16:00.

The various interests and research paths of the students embrace a wide range of disciplines: sound art, sculpture, site-specific installation, painting, photography, film, landscape architecture, environmental art.

The purpose of the exhibition is to approach different manners to share the creative act during its process; what role may the public have or take in influencing it? How do we think collectively?
Although the students did not intentionally work with a common theme binding the exhibition, resonances and similarities appear in the visual language and in the concerns animating their research.

Emma Fält and Egle Oddo: DRAW AND SOW

Draw and Sow is a display by Egle Oddo and Emma Fält opening with a performance Tuesday 2nd of April at 18:00. The artists present both finished pieces as well as work in progress, with the aim to give a voice to the engine moving and spinning behind and before the outcomes of their practices.

Works of art as finished products and exhibitions as collections of them are only one of the possible ways of transmitting knowledge and culture. There is an opportunity in transcending such a predefined modality of use and enjoyment, by entering into an ongoing relationship with the makers of art, their thinking, and their complex cognitive processing system.

The idea of Draw and Sow is precisely that to offer people opportunities for growing their own experimental thoughts within the apertures exposed in the fragmentary yet fertile unfinished.

In this relational modality the public itself will with its presence de facto shape and alter the experience of the other spectators and of the makers.

The exhibition is part of the ongoing series presenting teachers of Art School MAA 2018–2019.

Egle Oddo, b. 1975 in Italy. Her work focuses on linear and non-linear narration as an art form. Since 2007 she consistently works performing with seeds. Using what she names as ‘an un-gardening modality’, Egle fades the demarcation line between sites for cultivars, urban landscape and wilderness, creating in the long term unpredictable assemblages of species and new aesthetic formations. When offered, exchanged, and planted, the seeds become a symbol of reciprocity in the inter-cultural and inter-species relationships, becoming also part of a nomadic population that does not exist in a continuous, always-alike, centralized form like a seed bank, but it is widespread, living and acting in the hands of various communities. Her work is carried out following a careful observation of the emerging way in which people touch, treat and share the seeds in different cultures.

Egle’s creations are present at international biennials, Museums and relevant institutions, as well as cutting edge and independent alternative spaces and events.

Egle Oddo’s research is supported by Arts Promotion Centre, by Kone Foundation and STEBICEF Department of Vegetal Biology, Anthropology and Zoology of Palermo University.

Emma Vilina Fält, b.1983 in Finland, BA Design, MA Fine Art, is a Finnish artist working in the field of drawing, performance, installation and live art. Her main interests are in workshops as live acts, contact, listening and togetherness of drawing. Her work takes a comprehensive look at the act of drawing as a means to make contact and collaboratively explore our experience of the world. The body of her work combines drawing, sound and movement and is often inspired by language, sites and collisions of living and inanimate worlds. Fält has shown her work in Finland and abroad in festivals, symposiums, Museums. She works with artists, researchers and communities around the world to open new drawing dialogues. Emma Teaches drawing at Art School Maa in Helsinki, and works as a visiting teacher in different schools and institutions around the world. Fält is one of the co-directors in Thinking through Drawing – an Interdisciplinary education and research – network.

Joakim Pusenius: Kesken kaiken

Juhlistapalaajat takeissaan miettien jo huomista.

Kesken kaiken -näyttely koostuu useamman vuoden aikana kuvattujen arkisten valokuvien sarjoista ja Juhlat -nimisestä 6 minuuttisesta videoteoksesta. Valokuva on ollut olennainen osa Puseniuksen työskentelyprosessia jo pitkään. Liikkuvan kuvan parissa työskentelyn ylijäämänä syntyneet kuvat ovat kuitenkin harvemmin päätyneet esille. Kesken kaiken -näyttely lähti ideasta tuoda valokuvatyöskentely osaksi Juhlat -videoteoksen tematiikkaa. Näyttely rakentaa päiväkirjamaista kokonaisuutta allekirjoittaneen oman, harhaisesti haluavan kamerasilmän matkaksi.

Joakim Pusenius työskentelee kokeellisen elokuvan ja valokuvan parissa. Pusenius valmistui Kuvataideakatemiasta vuonna 2015 ja hän on valmistumisensa jälkeen pitänyt muutamia yksityisnäyttelyitä ja ryhmänäyttelyitä Suomessa ja ulkomailla.  2017-2018 Pusenius työskenteli Ranskan valtion rahoittamassa mediataidekeskuksessa Le Fresnoyssa. Puseniuksen videoteoksia on ollut esillä kansainvälisillä kokeellisen videotaiteen festivaaleilla Saksassa ja Ranskassa. Tällä hetkellä Pusenius opettaa Taidekoulu MAA:ssa audiovisuaalisen ilmaisun perusteita. Näyttely on osa Taidekoulu MAAn näyttelysarjaa, jonka tarkoituksena on esitellä Taidekoulu MAAn opettajakuntaa 2018–2019.
